type='text'>Extremely Loud and Incredibly...Amazing?

Music: Elliott Smith

Title: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Author: Jonathan Safran Foer
# of Pages: 368
Grade: A+

Summary:
Nine-year-old Oskar Schell has embarked on an urgent, secret mission that will take him through the five boroughs of New York. His goal is to find the lock that matches a mysterious key that belonged to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11. This seemingly impossible task will bring Oskar into contact with survivors of all sorts on an exhilarating, affecting, often hilarious, and ultimately healing journey.

My Thoughts
Well the grade pretty much sums it up, this book was amazing...on too many levels to name, I really dont even feel entitled to say anything about the book. If anyone wants to discuss, I'm here but just to let everyone know your life is incomplete without this book and I love Oskar Schell to the death, if all kids were like Oskar, children would be my life...period.

I honestly am speechless.

Oh and Jonathan Safran Foer is my hero.

Gay Rights

So for DIA I had to write a statement for the Pros of Gay Rights ( do you realize how hard it was to write a Cons side for gay rights? we couldn't think of anything really besides Religion Says NO! haha we would suck as conservatives) Here it is anyway, what do you think? Its pretty rough but ah well they will fix it up and oh! i found this amazing website that basically confronts every issue to gay rights possible, I dont see how anyone could argue with it go and see! http://www.bidstrup.com/marriage.htm

"We believe that gay people should have the same rights as everyone else for the following basic reasons. Love is love, no matter what, scientifically proven to be imprinted into our biology, with no distinction towards gender, race, etc. Another reason is the benefit of legal rights which are strangely non-existant for homosexuals in jobs, housing, public accomodations, equal access to the government, and even equal protection of the law. Our last reason is rights as a human being. The basic right of freedom is being violated. One of the main issues against gay rights is the reason of the Bible saying it's wrong, which is, on top of already violating freedom in its most basic form, is now violating a constitutional freedom of freedom of religion which also inclues freedom from religion. By automatically assuming they are Christian and then forcing them to practice Christian beliefs is immoral, disgusting, going against our constituion, and violating basic rights as a human being."

Yeah I know, I snuck my opinion of extreme Christians, whatever, everyone knows its true.

The Icarus Girl by Helen Oyeyemi

Title: The Icarus Girl
Author: Helen Oyeyemi
Genre: African/Dark Fantasy/Reality
# of Pages: 352 pgs.
Grade: B+

Summary:
Jessamy “Jess” Harrison is eight years old. Sensitive, whimsical, possessed of an extraordinary and powerful imagination, she spends hours writing haiku, reading Shakespeare, or simply hiding in the dark warmth of the airing cupboard. As the child of an English father and a Nigerian mother, Jess just can’t shake off the feeling of being alone wherever she goes, and the other kids in her class are wary of her tendency to succumb to terrified fits of screaming. Believing that a change from her English environment might be the perfect antidote to Jess’s alarming mood swings, her parents whisk her off to Nigeria for the first time where she meets her mother’s family—including her formidable grandfather.

Jess’s adjustment to Nigeria is only beginning when she encounters Titiola, or TillyTilly, a ragged little girl her own age. To Jess, it seems that, at last, she has found someone who will understand her. But gradually, TillyTilly’s visits become more disturbing, making Jess start to realize that she doesn’t know who TillyTilly is at all.

My Thoughts
The first time this book caught my eye was when I heard that the author, Helen Oyeyemi, was only 17 years old at the start of this book. Being only 16, this of course sparked my interest, then I heard what the book was actually about and I knew I had to read it. Being an obsessor of fairy tales and where the line is drawn between good and bad, I could have sworn this book was written for me. I was not disappointed.

The character of TillyTilly was absolutely fascinating, one secnd seeming as an apparant savior for poor Jess the next second it seemed that TillyTilly was a demon sent from another world to torture Jess. I especially loved how easily the lines blurred between dreams and reality, and how I was totally caught up in trying to figure the mystery out. I have very little knowledge of any tribal beliefs from anywhere so the twist was a major twist for me and was something I did not see coming.

Of course there were a few minor things, parts that could have been executed a bit better and so on and so forth but all in all a great debut from a new author

America stupid...and getting stupider

Currently Listening To: Kill Hannah
Mood: anger but not about this, this is just amusing
Currently Reading: In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

WASHINGTON (AP) — There it sits on your night stand, that book you've meant to read for who knows how long but haven't yet cracked open. Tonight, as you feel its stare from beneath that teetering pile of magazines, know one thing — you are not alone.

One in four adults say they read no books at all in the past year, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll released Tuesday. Of those who did read, women and seniors were most avid, and religious works and popular fiction were the top choices.

The survey reveals a nation whose book readers, on the whole, can hardly be called ravenous. The typical person claimed to have read four books in the last year — half read more and half read fewer. Excluding those who hadn't read any, the usual number read was seven....

"I just get sleepy when I read," said Richard Bustos of Dallas, a habit with which millions of Americans can doubtless identify. Bustos, a 34-year-old project manager for a telecommunications company, said he had not read any books in the last year and would rather spend time in his backyard pool.

That choice by Bustos and others is reflected in book sales, which have been flat in recent years and are expected to stay that way indefinitely. Analysts attribute the listlessness to competition from the Internet and other media, the unsteady economy and a well-established industry with limited opportunities for expansion.

When the Gallup poll asked in 2005 how many books people had at least started — a similar but not directly comparable question — the typical answer was five. That was down from 10 in 1999, but close to the 1990 response of six.

In 2004, a National Endowment for the Arts report titled "Reading at Risk" found only 57% of American adults had read a book in 2002, a four percentage point drop in a decade. The study faulted television, movies and the Internet.

Who are the 27% of people the AP-Ipsos poll found hadn't read a single book this year? Nearly a third of men and a quarter of women fit that category. They tend to be older, less educated, lower income, minorities, from rural areas and less religious.

At the same time, book enthusiasts abound. Many in the survey reported reading dozens of books and said they couldn't do without them.

"I go into another world when I read," said Charlotte Fuller, 64, a retired nurse from Seminole, Fla., who said she read 70 books in the last year. "I read so many sometimes I get the stories mixed up."

Among those who said they had read books, the median figure — with half reading more, half fewer — was nine books for women and five for men. The figures also indicated that those with college degrees read the most, and people aged 50 and up read more than those who are younger.

Pollyann Baird, 84, a retired school librarian in Loveland, Colo., says J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter fantasy series is her favorite. But she has forced herself to not read the latest and final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, because she has yet to file her income taxes this year due to an illness and worries that once she started the book, "I know I'd have to finish it."

People from the South read a bit more than those from other regions, mostly religious books and romance novels. Whites read more than blacks and Hispanics, and those who said they never attend religious services read nearly twice as many as those who attend frequently.

There was even some political variety evident, with Democrats and liberals typically reading slightly more books than Republicans and conservatives.

The Bible and religious works were read by two-thirds in the survey, more than all other categories. Popular fiction, histories, biographies and mysteries were all cited by about half, while one in five read romance novels. Every other genre — including politics, poetry and classical literature — were named by fewer than five percent of readers.

More women than men read every major category of books except for history and biography. Industry experts said that confirms their observation that men tend to prefer non-fiction.

"Fiction just doesn't interest me," said Bob Ryan, 41, who works for a construction company in Guntersville, Ala. "If I'm going to get a story, I'll get a movie."

Those likeliest to read religious books included older and married women, lower earners, minorities, lesser educated people, Southerners, rural residents, Republicans and conservatives.

The publishing business totaled $35.7 billion in global sales last year, 3% more than the previous year, according to the Book Industry Study Group, a trade association. About 3.1 billion books were sold, an increase of less than 1%.

The AP-Ipsos poll was conducted from August 6 to 8 and involved telephone interviews with 1,003 adults. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Copyright 2007 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. I would take pictures to prove it but ok thats just gross and I'm not going to subject you to that. I also find it fascinating that I got this cut because I fell down the stairs, for the 7th time in a row! It was hardcore I admit it, but painful. I really dont see myself as all that clumsy but apparently my body disagrees, because I've always had the ridiculous ability to trip on air. Yes I have the ability to trip on a gas. I know, Im totally confused as to why Barnum & Bailey havent called me yet but I digress.

SO I'm still bleeding but I'm going to move on to a different subject because its starting to get a little old. In Journalism today it was pretty hilarious, we were talking about using non-sexist terms in articles but the way she started it out was so amusing because we basically thought of all the names you call "promiscious girls" and some of the stuff my class came up with...nympho? doorknob? town bicycle? lady of the evening? haha working girl was definitely the nicest one. Then we came up with ones for "promiscious guys" and like 90% of them were congratulatory type names, like yeah you totally got laid! nice work! *thumbs up* but then this one guy suggested faggot, I was sort of offended...I mean I'm not gay or anything but besides that being really offensive on the level of nigger to a black person, it also had nothing to do with promiscious guys but I ignored it because that guy is an idiot anyway who apparentely is in a band that sounds like "Led Zeppelin and System of a Down but is also mostly Nirvana"...whatever the hell that means.

And my parents are letting me keep my hair heck yes! And if you are curious, I do not look like the picture I have up, that picture is about 3 months old and I look very different now...well my hair does anyway...I would post pictures but I can't find a freaking camera.

At the moment I'm reading Voices of the Street by Philip K. Dick which is about a man who has the seemingly good life who isnt sastified and starts to go mad, not that far in yet but its good so far. I'm also reading Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay (Lindsey? whatever), I've only read the first chapter but its about a serial killer who only goes after the "bad" guys. The first chapter was ok, besides the different twist I have a feeling its only going to be decent. For one, I never bought into the whole good and bad being black and white. I hate it when newspapers paint criminals as like fucking monsters, obviously there are some crimes that are pretty heinous and kinda overshadow everything else but its so fascinating. Just looking at it from a human behavior standpoint, just think about it. Every murderer, rapist, robber etc etc. has a family somewhere. Parents that love them, maybe siblings that grew up with them, lovers, children. It really is very interesting. If you want to read a really good book that kinda delves on both sides of the story is In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, I couldnt read the last 10 pages for the longest longest time, just because of how fucking creepy it gets, I finally did, but man that book is incredible. So I have to finish being maternal to my brother and cut his pizza for him, what a lazy 13 year old.

America Technically is a Communist Country?

Listening to Muse...again...feeling angry...and lonely...maybe a little depressed...mostly anger

yeah you read that right, America currently fits the description of a Communist country. I'm really angry right now so sorry that I'm just jumping in here. So Karl Marx, famous Communist you know his name anyway, smart guy. Marx wrote a document which listed the 10 basic things that make a country Communist, and you have to meet all 10 or you aren't Communist etc. etc. Obviously the majority of the ideas just go along with any government so up until now America was most of them with a few major differences, which is how it should be. The past 8 years a man by the name of George. W. Bush has been corroding at what it means to be American, and made this country a virtual hellhole so to speak. Some of you may not have noticed or dont care or whatever, but you should. You really should, everything you do, from reading a certain book to going to certain websites all the way down to being able to choose certain subjects in school is all because of our basic rights as Americans, saying you dont care about politics is the equivalent of saying that you dont care if all that is taken away. Understandably I definitely wont be the first to defend politics as being remotely interesting and I definitely understand the stance of "Politics are boring." But to an extent whether you find them boring or not, you should always...ALWAYS be well informed about what is going on in our country and what our President is doing and ESPECIALLY now with the presidential elections coming up. And now I have something to prove why you should be informed about what politics.

Up to 2 weeks ago, we were a democracy. No one was going to argue that. Well...we are to an extent anyway but bottom line is America is run as a democracy. Right? Wrong. 2 weeks ago our President issued an executive order while obviously worded to mask its true meaning, more or less says "Anyone in rebellion against the US is putting themselves in the position to lose all posessions, house, car, life and money and will be jailed." Yeah, do you get it? You can get your fucking house taken away now for speaking out against the US government. Then you are going to get thrown into the fucking clank. Hmm lets go down the checklist of Communism here shall we, go to this website, which basically shows Karl Marx's 10 "Commandements" and our equivalent of EACH and EVERY one of them ok well maybe not, but how long do you think that's going to last? America=Communism?

Now what? Not really...anyway now we get to move onto White Days. Wow I just popped my back, that felt really good...oh sorry again ANYWAY. White Days. Here we go. Allez viens! haha..haha..ha.ha

So on White Days my schedule goes like this----> English II Honors, Advisement, Modern European History (by the way does anyone find that title an oxymoron? How can something be historic yet described as modern at the same time...?) and then Biology.

English II Honors is pretty fantastic. Well not fantastic persay but I enjoy this class. My teacher is really nice and we got to decipher Sylvia Plath poems on the first day and I lurve Sylvia Plath, I mean come on she killed herself by sticking her head in a fucking oven. That's crazy. I <3 crazy people. But yeah the books we read are pretty good, I've read all of them except one. One of them is Macbeth by Shakespeare, I can't remember if I like that play or not, I really dislike Shakespeare, in all honesty. I truly do. I think we should replace it with something else, I can think of better books to read but whatev.

Then we have Advisement aka "Study Time", I hate this fucking class. Nina is in it which is cool but its the only good thing about it. I HATE my teacher, he banned us from using out iPods...during fucking Study Hour, yet I'm allowed to listen to my iPod in like every single other class? That's just messed up. He's also an idiot, and has the last name Irwin so I call him Steve Irwin, it really pisses him off. He doesnt say anything but you can tell. You can see the rage in his eyes ;)

Then we have Mod Euro History and as I've said before the title is a huge oxymoron. But the teacher is fantastic and hilarious, even though I am the only sophomore in there, everyone else is a junior and senior but they are all really nice. Surprise surprise, I'm just lucky to find the only nice upper classmen in the school haha, even though I already know like half of them because I have "connections" The only sucky part is the history movies, I loathe history movies. We had to watch one on Peter the Great a couple of days ago. I spent the time thinking of alternate titles for him like Peter the Guy Who Left Being King to Become Incognito aka Mr. Pancake Batter for Brains...I dunno stupid stuff like that but it killed time, though by the time I started paying attention at the end I was really confused and was never certain if we were still on the topic of Peter the Great.

Halfway through MEH is lunch...I have to mention that cuz lunch is important.

And then we have Biology. I really really really really really really really really HATE this class and the teacher and everything involved with it. I do not know how I am going to survive this class...period. I feel so much hate right now I cant even think of a good rant to describe how much this class sucks.

So who's ready for school tomorrow? HA right.

School is for Fuckers

Wow so its a been a while, mostly because I just got the internet last night, honestly being without the internet for the time span of a month was not as easy I thought it was going to be, though I did manage to finish 37 books in that time frame...literally. It isnt like I had anything else to do.

Anywho this my yearly examination of my schedule, teachers and school in general. Warning: many an expletive will be thrown in...sorry.

So our schedule goes Purple Days and White Days, on Purple Days we have 4 classes and then the next day is a White Day and we have our other 4 classes. I've been to a lot of schools and this one definitely has the best schedule structure. So score 1 for my school. So my Purple Days go French II, Journalism, Intro Tech, and then Geometry. Not liking French II at all, I forget her name its like Maechler or something like that but anyway she is this kindly old woman who I almost 99% sure teaches French as a 3rd language with Spanish being her first and English second, so she has the most bizarre accent ever. Anyway apparently she had breast cancer last year which is awfully depressing but unfortunately I'll probably forget that once she sends me back to French I for failing that stupid pre-exam thing. I can't help it that my previous French II teacher in 9th grade was totally inept at French and only taught us how to conjugate irregular verbs to the tune of the Mexican Hat Dance...yes the Mexican Hat Dance. So all I can remember are random phrases such as Je mappele? and Je joue au tennis? and Allez Viens! which means Let's go or hurry up or something and i like to scream it at my family in a french accent. Anyway yeah so that class sucks so -1 for my school and aww look they are back at 0.

Next I have Journalism, and I love my Journalism teacher. She is hilarious, unfortunately I'm not as crazy about Journalism and I'm just taking it to keep up my writing skills until I can get into Creative Writing but whatever, its still a pretty awesome class and we get to drink coffee which is just plain brilliant. So look my school has another point

And then we have lunch...everyone loves lunchtime.

And THEN we have Intro Tech Theater. It's shaping up to be a pretty sucky class, the only good part is the connections to join Crew for the plays. I'll probably be doing it for The Odd Couple, but I loathe Grease so I wont be doing that I dont think haha. The teacher is kinda a prick though and we had to like measure the freaking stage and if we were like an inch off we had to go and do it again and then THAT was bad enough but then we were done with that we had to draw the freaking stage to scale on a piece of paper with like every 1/8 of an inch equaling a foot. So thats just fan-fucking-tastic. And then Jordan and Kim were like arguing over it the whole time and I was like The stage is tearing our friendship apart! in this way overly dramatic voice which was funny. Yeah I laugh at my own jokes, thats how I roll. My school gets no points or loses any for this. Sucky teacher, fun class. It's a tie.

And then its Geometry. Hooray for math! Yeah if you were actually thinking that...I dunno I dont know what to say to you. In all honesty my teacher is really nice and she's kinda perky and its sort of amusing, because she is kind of endearing...like a little child....Ok that was really condescending but I didnt mean it that way. Anyway everyone in that class I absolutely dislike. There are no strangers or people I like just a bunch of people I know and hate, and they hate me too so its all good in the hood. Plus they are a little stupid, they were asking questions we learned in pre-alg in 8th grade. I was like Ok I really suck at math...so if I really suck at math and I can do all this stupid stuff in my sleep...That's bad. So anyway we got like 12 problems of simple simple equations the ones where its like 5y-2=10...12 of those...in freaking geometry...its really depressing. I'm so depressed right now I'll have to do my white day classes later.

J'aime champignons

CHUCK NORRIS CAN KICK YOUR HONOR ROLL STUDENTS ASS

That will be all

would you save my life if you knew...

So, I'm moving today. Far, far away, to the land of Far, Far Away actually. Prince Charming and I have a thing you know? But let's keep it on the DL. I'm actually moving back to Colorado and even though I lived there the year before last so it is more of a moving back it still feels weird. We are going to take a merry little trip down the lane of past memories. Sound fun? I was born in NY, moved to West Virginia, moved to Texas, moved to Indiana, moved to Colorado, moved to Springfield, MO (where I am currently residing until 5 pm today, and now we are moving back exactly to where we lived in Colorado. I was thinking of including everything we almost moved to but I shall spare you.

Anyway, I got to page 500 of Harry Potter last night. Rowling gets maximum kudos for how depressing and dark it is. I for one am impressed. Personally, I think/wish that Harry is going to meet a bitter and tragic end, whilst taking out Voldemort in the process so it's all good in the hood. Actually, that was all Ashley's idea but I still think Harry is going to die. My mother got me Blood Meridian and The Road by Cormac McCarthy and I'm about to bust a seam in just thinking about reading them, because they look amazing and also I have no access to a computer for the next 2 weeks so I suppose it's au revoir, simone! At least I have my iPod, losing a computer is like losing a child true but losing my iPod? That's like losing sextuplets....easily. Wait, what am I talking about?

My mouth still hurts, horribly, I think that grass actually might have been poisoned. Definitely wouldnt surprise me. Ha, I guess it is my new life lesson. Other mothers will be teaching their children "Don't touch things that are hot," and "It's rude to point, dear." Mine will go along the lines of "Don't eat grass." (This is assuming I have children, which is looking pretty unlikely) Honestly, it is an important lesson to learn. I was unfortunate to learn it at such a late time in my life, but I have to look on the bright side, better late then never huh?

You should go and listen to this song, everytime I listen to it, it makes exactly one tear fall out of my right eye, every time!

Click this or die

i had a brain that felt like pancake batter

....so I look like Jade Puget; read: not. Ah well, one day I will prove how scarily obsessive I am by getting it professionally done, for the meantime I think this works out ok, right? I mean even with the dyed jadehawk my dad let the words "I like it" slip from his lips, which boils down to I did a-okay...sort of. Still deciding whether to put one of the pictures as my default, what the fuck, might as well.

I'm moving tomorrow. How many times have I moved now? Counting...counting...oh yeah this is 7! How exciting. Half of me is slightly excited that I'm moving back to the land of familiarity, the other half? Find me a car with a nice stereo, a deserted meadow, over-active tear glands, and something by Morrissey and I'll be set. OH! and vegan cookies...yes cookies. But in the end with a few exceptions, Missouri is, in the words of Jade Puget and too many people to mention, the land of misery. But I will miss Ashley. Ah I might cry, no crying...yet...I still need the cookies and the deserted meadow and the Morrissey CD.

IN OTHER NEWS: I ate some grass...on a dare...now my mouth has so many cuts, my mouth burns with a rage to parallel an emo kid's anger after being called emo. Especially after drinking orange juice. Especially.

IN OTHER OTHER NEWS: I got a free glowstick from borders! Comes as a necklace and everything. Jealous? Yeah you bet you are.

I'm so excited to read the Harry Potter book tomorrow. Yes I still read them, and yes I love them with allllll my heart and fucking soul. <3 Ashley has decided that both Harry and Voldemort die, which actually seems pretty likely in my opinion. I think Harry is going to die. I will laugh if he does. I have no idea why that seems so funny but it could have something to do with the strange image of Daniel Radcliffe being stalked in the streets of London by a figure who has obviously gotten more than one surgery done to look like a fucked up snake.

A cashier at Border's had a Death Eater tattoo, I would have said something like "that's a cool tattoo" but I wasnt sure if it was temporary or permanent, like he had to get it for the Harry Potter party that night or something and would have brought up unwanted anger if I mentioned it.

I'm also reading a book called "The House of Sand and Fog" by Andre Dubus III, it's actually pretty good, though the author (I think it's a he but you never know these days) has a fetish for explaining every sex scene that comes up. Ok if you want to go into detail in a couple, fine, it is pretty irrelevant but when you have like 3 sex scenes a chapter sometimes less is more and honestly saying "they went and made love" or "they went and had sex" with a few more descriptive words thrown is, is perfectly fine. I dont need a few pages for every one. In all honesty, I am trying to read a book, I do not need to know your sexual fantasties MR/MRS(?) Andre Dubus III. Right now, the book is holding a lot of promise because Kathy Nicolo ,who lost her house, is starting to go crazy. I heart crazy people.

Oh, go and listen to the song on my profile, I posted the lyrics on my last post, so go and listen and get your mind blown out your butt.
